Our Campus

Anthon Elementary School was established in 1966 and was named for a much-respected Uvalde educator, Mamie Anthon (1886-1957). Miss. Anthon taught in Prarie Dell, Coke and Uvalde. In her early teaching career, she wore high top-laced shoes, black skirts and white blouses. She drove old Bessie, hitched to a buggy, for five miles to teach third grade in the old Getty Street School. Miss Anthon taught math, then was the librarian and director of character education. She also served as County Superintendent from 1918 until her resignation from that office in 1929. Miss Anthon continued teaching until 1955 for a total of 44 years. She had the reputation of being good, strict, dedicated teacher; thus it is seemly that Anthon Elementary should bear her name.
